About the Fellowship

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention is an autonomous technical Agency established by the African Union (AU) to enhance the capacity, capabilities, and partnerships of Africa's public health institutions. Africa CDC is mandated through Article 3 of its governing statute to support Member States in capacity building in public health through medium and long-term field epidemiologic and laboratory training programmes.

To fulfil this mandate, Africa CDC convened the Africa Health Workforce Compact in 2025, with a focus on investment, training, and retaining of a skilled health workforce. The Compact builds upon the Africa CDC Framework for Health Workforce Development 2020–2025 and supports the African Union Agenda 2063.

The African Epidemic Service (AES) Program is a flagship training program aiming to build the capacity of mid-level professionals to control, prevent, detect, and respond to disease threats and outbreaks by employing science, policy, and data-driven interventions.

Public Health Informatics (PHI)

Develop, manage, and lead informatics-savvy health organizations for the digital age.

Fellowship Track Overview

A full-time, two-year applied fellowship program featuring 80% practical and 20% didactic training. The PHI fellowship aligns with the Africa CDC’s Digital Transformation Strategy and addresses programmatic goals set within the Framework for Workforce Development.

Key Eligibility & Differentiators

Citizen of an African Union Member State (Under age 35).
Possess a Bachelor’s or Master's degree specifically in Computer Science, Data Science, IT, or health-related fields.
Minimum of 3 years relevant post-graduation experience.
Strong focus on building digital systems for health interventions.

Applied Epidemiology

Strengthen disease prevention, surveillance, and response capacity across Member States.

Fellowship Track Overview

A full-time, two-year competency-based applied epidemiology training program. The program includes three months in-person didactic training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and 21 months of applied training in a site hosted by an African Union Member State.

Key Eligibility & Differentiators

Citizen of an African Union Member State (Under age 35).
Currently employed in an African country with explicit permission from the employing government institution.
Commitment to engaging directly in surveillance system evaluation and rapid outbreak investigations.

Laboratory Leadership

Develop leadership, management, and technical skills to strengthen laboratory systems.

Fellowship Track Overview

A structured program designed to be completed over 12 months, combining in-person workshops, virtual learning, mentorship, and practical outbreak response assignments. Didactic in-person workshops comprise three months, while the remaining nine months involve applied learning hosted by an African Union Member State.

Key Eligibility & Differentiators

Citizen of an African Union Member State (Under age 35).
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in laboratory sciences or a highly related field.
Employed in an African country with a guarantee to return to employment post-training.
Focuses on balancing theoretical learning with hands-on practice in real-world public health laboratory settings.
